Congress politician accused of desecrating Gandhi statue

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Himachal Pradesh police have registered a case against Congress politician Prem Kaushal for allegedly desecrating a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Hamirpur town in the night of August 9.

Kaushal had contested the Mawa assembly seat on a Congress ticket in the last election in the state.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (northern range) K C Sandyal told reporters on Monday evening that Kaushal had been named in the first information report registered by the Hamirpur police station under sections 295 and 3 of the Damage to Public Property Act.

Kaushal could not be arrested as he had secured interim bail from a local court.

Sandyal said the politician's Maruti car had been impounded. The case against him was registered after marble pieces matching the stone of the broken statue were recovered from his car, the officer said.
