DA case: Laloo's bail extended for three months

The Patna high court extended the interim bail of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav in the disproportionate assets case for another three months.

Granting the interim bail on Friday, Justice Shashank Kumar Singh said that it is subject to cancellation if Laloo harasses the witnesses and directly or indirectly influences the trial.

The earlier bail expired on August 10.

The incident was not bereft of its share of dramatic moments. Laloo's petition for extending the bail could not be entertained by the high court on Thursday leading to speculation that he may have to surrender before the Central Bureau of Investigation special court of S K Pathak for a brief period on Friday.

As is the practice, Laloo was required to file a petition seeking extension of bail. It was done on August 2 and listed before Justice Shashank Kumar Singh on August 8. However, the CBI counsel sought an adjournment seeking time to file a suitable reply.

So, the court directed the matter to be listed for August 10 before Justice Narayan Roy, who is hearing the cases pertaining to the fodder scam these days.

However, on the afternoon of August 10, Justice Roy refused to hear the matter as another bench had passed orders in this case. He directed that the case be listed before Justice Singh.

Laloo's counsel pleaded that if the bail was not extended, Yadav could be taken into custody.

Justice Roy then placed the matter before the division bench comprising Chief Justice Ravi S Dhawan and Justice Shashank Kumar Singh, which did not heed the request as it was hearing other cases. Besides, the usual time for mentioning cases for listening is in the morning.

The case was finally taken up on Friday putting an end to the suspense.
