Now, Laloo faces a rape chargeOur Correspondent in Patna More trouble for Laloo Prasad Yadav. Even as the former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief languishes behind bars in a disproportionate assets case, Champa Biswas, wife of a senior IAS officer, has now alleged that he (Laloo) had raped her sometime in 1995. The allegation made by Biswas while deposing before a lower court on February 29 has already sparked a row in the state with the leader of opposition in the state assembly Sushil Kumar Modi demanding that Laloo Yadav be summoned by the court. He has also sought a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the case. The RJD, however, says the allegations are a desperate opposition's attempt to malign their leader. "Those who have lost political battles are now making unfounded allegations," said Shivanand Tiwary, national spokesman of the party. Biswas had first written in 1998 to the then governor Sunder Singh Bhandari alleging that she, her mother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece and maid servant were raped by Babloo Yadav, son of senior RJD leader Hemlata Yadav in the year 1995. However, there was no mention of Laloo's name in this letter. The RJD chief's name first figured when Biswas wrote to the National Human Rights Commission. "What prevented Biswas from charging Laloo Yadav in the first letter she wrote to the governor in 1998. Besides, why is it that she did not disclose the news of her rape to her husband for two years," asked an RJD leader who wished not to be quoted.
