Four Naxalites killed in HyderabadSyed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad Four Left-wing extremists belonging to the outlawed People's War Group were killed in two separate encounters with the police in Hyderabad late on Friday night. Senior police officials said the slain Naxalites were involved in the killing of Panchayat Raj Minister A Madhava Reddy, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Ch Umesh Chandra and former TDP legislator Budda Vengal Reddy. The first encounter took place around 10.30 pm near Ameerpet Crossroad where five Naxalites in an autorickshaw were intercepted by anti-extremist commandos. While two of the Naxalites managed to escape after opening fire at the police, the other three were killed on the spot. The second encounter took place couple of hours later at Vivekananda Nagar at Kukatpally AP Housing Board Colony when armed policemen on a routine patrol intercepted another rickshaw. In the exchange of fire that ensued one Naxalite was killed while three others managed to escape. In a statement released on Saturday the Hyderabad City Commissioner of Police S R Sukumara said that the slain Naxalites had been identified as R Selva Chary alias Shankar, Nakka Yadagiri alias Jagan, Praveen and Madhu. Sukumara said that all four were members of an action team formed by the PWG in July 1999 for killing political leaders, police officers and other targets.
