E-Mail this report to a friend

Twenty-eight people were killed and eight injured when a Ram Navami procession came in contact with a 11,000-volt wire last night at Kasab Mohalla of Daltonganj in Palamau district, Bihar.

Police superintendent Nirmal Kumar Azad said the mishap took place around 0015 hrs, when the procession's flag was found to be too tall to pass under the wire. The processionists then made the fatal mistake of attempting to sever the wire.

Twenty people died on the spot while eight succumbed to injuries in hospital. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of four of them is stated to be life threatening. Almost all the victims were youth.

Identification of the bodies could not be done thus far. A sense of grief prevailed in the area following the tragedy.
