E-Mail this report to a friend

The Jammu and Kashmir police met with major success today when they recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a truck laden with fruit on the Jammu-Srinagar highway near Patinitop, about 70 km from Srinagar.

Police sources said the truck, which was on its way to New Delhi from Kupwara, met with an accident near Patinitop, which led to some arms and ammunition falling out. Alert passers-by quickly informed the police.

A search of the vehicle unearthed seven AK-47 rifles, two pistols with magazines, 10 landmines, five anti-personnel mines, two rocket launchers, 20 improvised explosive devices, 25 remote-control devices, nine wireless sets, two grenade launchers, and a huge quantity of ammunition.

The driver was arrested. On interrogation he revealed that six extremists were also travelling with him, but they fled after the accident occurred. A combing operation has been launched to nab them.
