Move to stop auction of Mughal jewels

E-Mail this report to a friend

Campaign for National Unity, a voluntary organisation, has protested against the scheduled auction of the jewels of Mughal Emperors Akbar and Jehangir by Christie's in London.

The government should intervene immediately and stall the October 6 auction, the organisation said.

Describing it as an insult to all Indians, it said the government should secure the jewels as they are part of the country's heritage.

The organisation pointed out that among the jewels to be auctioned are Emperor Akbar's baroque pearl drop pendant and the emerald 'bazuband' of Jehangir. Also, jewels that adorned the turbans of the maharaja of Patiala.

Akbar's pendant, held in silver setting designed as a mango leaf (1574-75), is estimated to fetch between 65,000-95,000 pounds while the 'bazuband', adorned with gems and pearls, could cost between 6,00,000-8,00,000 pounds, it said.
