E-Mail this report to a friend

At least four Assam Rifles personnel were killed when armed militants ambushed a vehicle carrying them at Thanlon sub-division, headquarters of Manipur's Churachandpur district today police said.

The ambush coincided with the election campaign of Defence Minister George Fernandes in the state for his party candidate Kim Gangte.

The militants pumped a fussilade of bullets on the Assam Rifles vehicle from both sides of the Tipaimukh road near Thanlong killing the jawans on the spot.

Security forces returned the fire, but it was not known whether the militants suffered any casualty.

Reinforcements were rushed from Churachandpur and Thanlon and a massive combing operation was launched to nab the militants, police said.
