Army foils another intrusion bid

Army troops foiled yet another infiltration bid in the Balakot area of Mendhar sector today, killing a Pakistani intruder in an encounter.

The troops also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition during a search operation in the Mandi area of Poonch district, a defence spokesperson said.

He said troops, on a tip-off that a group of militants had sneaked into this side of the Line of Control, laid an ambush in the wee hours of the morning. On being challenged, the intruders fired at the troops who retaliated, killing one militant. However, his associates managed to flee to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

A search in the area led to the recovery of one AK rifle, two pistols, three wireless sets, and a large quantity of ammunition, besides Rs 60,000 in Pakistani currency and Rs 1,000 in Indian currency.

Meanwhile, during search operations in Nawal and Barapathar areas near Mandi in Poonch district today, the army recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition, including one UMG, three disposable rocket launchers, one 60 mm mortar bomb, 1500 rounds, 20 grenades, 14 kg explosives, two IEDs and material used to make IEDs. Patrolling troops also recovered the bullet-ridden body of a militant in a jungle near Narian village in Poonch today. The body was later handed over to the police.
