'Only in India can a man closely associated with the ruination of our economy be called a saviour!'

Subject: 'Ridiculing a widow does not bring great credit to Hindutva'

The interview with Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee chief S M Krishna is nothing but a sample of his party's minority appeasement. Does he not know that his leader's (i e, Gandhiji) faith supposedly teaches one to show the other cheek when slapped on one? Do Congress leaders believe in it anymore?

If so, yes, ridiculing a widow is a sin as per Hindutva. Also, look at the way Krishna ends the interview: saying Inshallah, which is clearly intended to woo the minority vote bank.

As long as we have such parties and such leaders, the backlash will only make parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena stronger and stronger.

Is widowhood a suitable qualification for India's prime minister? Does Sonia Gandhi have any other qualification except being Rajiv Gandhi's widow?

There have been other prime ministers in India and maybe their wives are a bit more qualified to hold office. Would Krishna go and promote their cause? Any self-respecting Indian should be ashamed of spouting such absurdity.

Wonderful performance by Varsha Bhosle who interviewed the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister.

Dr Farooq Abdullah talks a lot of sense. His suggested solution is the only viable one. Let the Line of Control become the international border, then hopefully India-Pakistan relations will improve to the extent that the border will become just a formality as it is with the European Union countries or between the United States and Canada.

Subject: Manmohan Singh

I could not contain my laughter when I read, in the introduction to Amberish Diwanji's interview with Dr Singh, that one of the qualities of the former finance minister was being "a truthful person." I guess that it was dedication to truthfulness that led him to declare that he was a resident of Assam when he entered the Rajya Sabha from there!

Also, how many persons were caught, found guilty or prosecuted for the big scams during his five-year tenure as finance minister? None. Only in India, can a man closely associated for 25 years with the ruination of our economy and enterprises be called a saviour!

Why doesn't Diwanji and his ilk dig into Singh's past before they peddle him as some kind of messiah? A review of his views as a member and secretary-general of the South-South Commission will be a good start to educate us about one of the most opportunistic hired hands in Indian politics.

I felt ashamed to see such an esteemed person like Dr Singh stooping to such a level. First of all he must admit that soldiers are meant for guarding our frontier against the enemy. Casualties are bound to be there in any conflict. To keep saying that 500 jawans lost their lives unnecessarily is to demoralise the army. Nobody should do that.

Manmohan Singh has conveniently forgotten that approximately 1,350 Indian jawans lost their lives fighting our own people, the Tamils of Sri Lanka. The jawans were not even defending our borders. It is a well known fact that up to Point 9842, the LoC is clearly marked on the maps and both India and Pakistan vacate their positions in high altitudes during winter and reoccupy the same at the commencement of summer.

This was being done during the Congress regime as during the subsequent ones. Pakistan did cheat this time and lost whatsoever international support it had. Goebellian tactics adopted by Manmohan Singh and his colleagues will never be successful. It is illogical to say that Vajpayee does not understand complex problems. His handling of Kargil as well as the economy puts him on a high pedestal. Can the same be said about Sonia Gandhi?

Dr Manmohan Singh's comments on the so-called scams under the BJP government are actually the result of his party's rule under Narasimha Rao. Manmohan Singh comes out as a very poor liar, to say the least.

Manmohan Singh says he is pained when he looks at poor people. For most of the last 50 years his party ruled the country. So his party is mainly responsible for all the mess the country is in.

He is taking about capable men running the country. But what about the capacity of Sonia Gandhi? We can't experiment with her as she does not even have a graduation degree and has always confined herself to the elite circles of Delhi and some foreign guests. How can she understand the complex Indian environment?

How shameless is the Congress leadership that they depend on an inexperienced widow to win the election for them. Even while applying for the job of a peon you need some experience but Sonia Gandhi's only qualification is that she is the daughter-in-law of the Nehru family.

People say Vajpayee is the right person in the wrong party but I think it applies equally to Manmohan Singh.

Manmohan Singh might be a good economist, but he must realise that to run a country we don't need leaders who are brilliant in economics or technology. They should rather be people of high moral values who are understanding enough and capable of delegating responsibility in a logical and correct manner.

If they have some charisma it is an added advantage and makes administration a lot easier. Unfortunately, Manmohan Singh doesn't have any charisma, while Vajpayeeji has it in abundance. Neither do I see Manmohan Singh as an able administrator which Atalji proved to be in his one-and-a-half year tenure, managing a government with diverse allies even as the power-hungry Congress lurked around the corner.

Talking about morals, Manmohan Singh should be wise enough not make such stupid remarks (''Atalji cannot understand complex situations'') about a proven leader unless he can substantiate them.

Right after the won't-say-anything piece on Manmohan Singh is this piece on Vajpayee's sidekick. Manvendra Singh apparently stands for nothing other than informing Indians that Italian-born women are worse than Indian-born men. This is "what clinched it" for him. What a joke.

Does he have any ideas on what his state and country needs besides freedom from Italians? These bums ought to stay at home and well ....

I like Seshan and believe that he is sincere. But the man has to realise that one is known by the company he keeps. Unfortunately, the Congress is as crooked as a party can get. Seshan will only tarnish his image and achieve nothing.

The biggest achievement of Indian politicians is to go on foreign trips, get medical treatment in American hospitals, live a plush life generally, notwithstanding their khadi or saffron jackets, jobs and mansions for their near and dear et al. Anyway we do wish Seshan all the best. I hope he can "walk his talk."

I had very high regard for T N Seshan as long as he was the Chief Election Commissioner. He was the one who really put the EC on the path to conducting the polls in a free, fair and impartial manner. He had the politicians reined in -- literally.

But to join the Congress at the end of it all is quite a let-down. A person like Seshan ought to have either fought the polls as an Independent or not at all. For him to criticise the BJP or any other party for that matter does not cut ice.

He was always viewed as a neutral person who maintained equidistance from all political parties. But by jumping into the ''cesspool'' of Indian politics he has shown himself to be like any other Indian politician. By becoming a ''true'' politician he has exposed the dichotomy in his personality.

Seshan has criticised L K Advani. But in what way is the Congress any better? Can Seshan explain why an upright and self-assured individual like him has joined, of all the parties, the Congress? A party which has an Italian as its president? Which consistently depends on the name Gandhi to even survive?

Is there a match between Seshan the personality and the Congress as a party? By joining the Congress he will also start using terms and phrases like ''high command'' , ''the Congress president will decide'' etc.

The Congress is a disgrace to the country. They have only one goal -- to come to power at all costs. So what if their actions result in the national exchequer spending thousands of millions of rupees on the general election.

As for Seshan, by joining the Congress he has exposed his true character. The message his action sends across is that all he did and said as CEC was just bluff and bluster. This is the real Seshan.
