Sikkim HC orders CBI probe into police violence

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Sikkim high court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe into alleged human rights violation by nine police personnel in the state.

Chief Justice Ripusudan Dayal has directed the CBI director to make an inquiry against the accused following a petition filed by one Taraman Chettri and three others, alleging torture by the policemen. The petitioners also urged the Sikkim Human Rights Committee chairman to render justice unto them.

Chief Justice Dayal asked the CBI to ensure ''fair'' investigation into the alleged human rights violation against nine policemen and submit the report to the court on or before October 27. The order followed a complaint made by the petitioner and three others on June 18.

Earlier, the case was with the state human rights committee alleging that they (the petitioner and others) were falsely implicated in an attempted kidnapping of a state government employee from Melli in south Sikkim. The petitioners alleged that they were brutally beaten up by the state policemen at the Melli border checkpost. The petitioners had prayed for initiation of proceedings before the human rights committee and also submitted that the CBI might be ordered to inquire the matter.
