An official spokesman said terrorists attacked a security force patrol in the Baderkul forest in the frontier district of Kupwara late last evening with automatic weapons. The forces retaliated, killing two of the extremists.

Two Kalashnikov rifles, seven magazines, 160 rounds and 10 grenades were recovered from the slain men.

In another encounter in the Kalaroos woods in the same district, one extremist and a jawan were killed.

Security forces killed another terrorist at Karihama during a search operation last evening and recovered one Kalashnikov rifle, one magazine and 17 rounds from the site.

Security forces also came under heavy fire from extremists at Village Rehgam last evening during a search operation. The forces returned the fire, but in the exchange two of their own personnel were killed along with a militant. Two Kalashnikov rifles and two grenades were recovered.

Terrorists shot at and wounded two militants who had been released from prison, Mehraj-ud-Din Sheikh and Manzoor Ahmad Najar -- at Sonamasjid in downtown Srinagar last evening. Both men died in hospital.
