Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

In a serious incident, militants took two intelligence officers and four Central Reserve Police Force personnel hostage after a fierce attack on a joint camp of the CRPF and Border Security Force at Handwara in Kupwara district, northern Kashmir, early today.

A senior police officer told rediff.com that a group of heavily armed militants attacked the camp, located in a house, with rockets and Kalashnikov rifles.

The camp also houses the office of the electoral returning officer for the district.

The militants then stormed the camp and seized the six persons.

Senior police and security force officers have rushed to the area. The 21 Rashtriya Rifles has laid siege to the camp and called on the extremists to surrender.
