TN governor sends Rajiv killers' clemency plea to state government

E-Mail this report to a friend

Tamil Nadu Governor M Fathima Beevi today sent the mercy petitions filed by the four condemned prisoners in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case to the state government, seeking its views on them.

Raj Bhavan sources said the governor, herself a former Supreme Court judge, would give her verdict on the petitions filed by Nalini, her husband Sriharan alias Murugan, Santhan (both members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and local Tamil Perarivalan after getting the state government's comments.

The four accused, whose death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in May, have sought clemency after exhausting all legal remedies.

The superintendent of the Vellore Central Prison, where the four prisoners are lodged, forwarded their petitions to the governor on October 18.

Meanwhile, prison sources clarified that after the governor disposes of the petitions, the accused are entitled to file a fresh set of clemency petitions with the President.
