E-Mail this report to a friend

At least 27 people including 13 women and a child were killed and 47 others injured when a Punjab Road Transport Corporation bus carrying pilgrims fell into a deep gorge near Hangruwal barrier on the Chohal-Chintpurni road in Hoshiarpur district this morning.

Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police R P Mittal said over telephone that the bus was returning from Dera of Baba Barbagh Singh in Himachal Pradesh. The bus fell into the 40-metre gorge when its driver lost control at a sharp turn in the hilly terrain.

The injured were hospitalised at Gagret in Himachal Pradesh and the civil hospital at Hoshiarpur, Mittal said.

The bus driver was among the killed.

Mittal said that the bus was hired in Ludhiana. The accident occurred about 20 kilometres from Hoshairpur town at around 0800 hours today.

Some of the injured were in a serious condition, he said. All the bodies had been retrieved, he added.
