E-Mail this report to a friend

Freedom fighter Ghulam Qadir Bhat, popular as Sher-i-ganderbali, died Wednesday morning after a brief illness. He was 80.

Bhat was a close associate of former chief minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, and is survived by wife, son and daughter.

Minister of Medical Education Dr Mustafa Kamal said the state had lost a great fighter, who always upheld the values of secularism and fought for the rights of the poor and downtrodden.

Bhat was one of the three MPs who represented J&K in the country's first Parliament.

For his pioneering role in the freedom struggle, the Indian government had awarded the 'Tamrapatra' to Bhat.
