E-Mail this report to a friend

The flood situation in Bihar worsened today as the Ganga inundated fresh areas in Katihar district following incessant rains in the area over the last three days. At least 325 people have so far lost their lives in this year's floods.

A Katihar report said the Ganga inundated a large stretch in Mednipur panchayat under Manihari sub-division in the district. More than 100 families have been rendered homeless and have been shifted to Manihari college.

Sub-divisional officer Devottam Verma said the flood threat to over 1000 families under Manihari sub-division had also increased following the change in the course of the river. The sub-divisional town had recorded rainfall of 170 mm during the past two days.

Central Water Commission sources said the Kamlabalan was flowing above the danger mark at Jhanjharpur by 43 centimetres and was likely to rise further tomorrow. Sources said the Bagmati and the Kosi were also rising, but were still below the danger mark.

Munger recorded rainfall of 35 mm, Ahirwalia (60 mm), Sikanderpur (91 mm), Samastipur (70 mm), Rosera (67 mm), Sonbarsa (85 mm), Kamtaul (79 mm), Jainagar (91 mm) and Jhanjharpur (113 mm) in the past 24 hours.
