Torn Quran pages lands film producer behind bars

E-Mail this report to a friend

Hollywood producer Ramesh Krishnamurti and director Douchan Gersi of the film The Return of the Thief of Baghdad were arrested for hurting the feelings of a particular community while shooting the film in Aurangabad yesterday. They were remanded to judicial custody today.

Both Krishnamurti and Gersi were produced before the judicial first class magistrate who rejected the bail application of the two and remanded them to custody till October 30.

According to police, some pages of the Quran were torn and dipped in tea to get an antique look for a scene in the film showing some thousand-year-old Arabic and Urdu books. The shooting of the film, featuring south Indian actor Chiranjeevi as hero, is being held at historical places like Aurangabad, Daulatabad and the Ellora caves.

When the members of the particular community came to know about the incident, they indulged in throwing stones at city buses and shops in the crowded Muslim localities yesterday.

Police took prompt action and arrested the producer and director on a complaint lodged against them by prominent leaders of that community for hurting their feelings.
