The home ministry has commissioned a detailed feasibility study of the national identity card system to provide identity cards to all citizens in the country. The Tata Consultancy Services has been entrusted to conduct the study which would cover a comprehensive examination of the feasibility of creation of an integrated data base of the population and for the issue of identity cards to the citizens.

At the end of the assignment, the consultants will give a coherent, feasible and realistic management plan for the creation of an integrated data base of personal identities in the country and the issue of identity cards to Indian citizens. The final report will be given by February/March, 2000.

An advisory committee, comprising of senior officers of the ministry of home affairs and other concerned central agencies has been constituted which would interact from time to time with TCS during the period of preparation of the feasibility report. Officers of the state governments would also be associated in the consultation process from time to time.
