Defence Minister George Fernandes today said India is keen to increase its share in the defence export market and offered to set up joint ventures and collaborations with various developed and developing countries to produce world class defence equipment for domestic needs and the export market.

Inaugurating the Defexpo India '99 in New Delhi being attended by representatives from 28 countries including Britain, France, South Africa, Israel and many other countries, the defence minister said India offers tremendous opportunities for joint ventures, technological transfers and co-production facilities for export to other markets.

''Presently our exports in the defence sector are modest. However, we hope to access a large share of the export market in the years to come.''

A total of 194 exhibitors from all over the world are participating in the five-day event being jointly organised by the defence ministry and the Confederation of Indian Industry. These include 117 overseas exhibitors and 77 domestic ones from both the public and the private sector. This is the first such exhibition which is organised jointly by the defence ministry and the CII.
