Troops continued to remain on high alert along the Line of Control in view of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Amanullah Khan's threat to breach the LoC in the Poonch sector today.

More security forces have been deployed in Mendhar and other areas near the LoC in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior police officers have been keeping a close watch on the situation. "The LoC has been peaceful throughout the night and we have not received any reports of violation," said a senior officer.

Last evening, however, the Pakistani artillery targeted several areas along the LoC in the Uri sector.

A senior police officer said in Srinagar today that Pak artillery shells hit villages Chorandi and Batgran in the Uri sector killing four civilians. Four others who had received injuries had been admitted to a hospital.

Shelling was intense at Chorandi where two civilians, identified as Mohammad Shafi and Fateh Mohammad, died on the spot. Two others who had received injuries were shifted to a hospital.

In Batgran, a woman, identified as Ulfat Bano, was killed while two others had sustained injuries. Another civilian died at Karnah in Kupwara.
