Violence-hit Kannur remains tense

E-Mail this report to a friend

The situation in Panur and surrounding areas in Kannur district of Kerala, where two Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists were killed and two others seriously injured in a bomb explosion on Thursday night, continued to remain tense today.

Police sources said no incident was reported from the trouble-hit areas during the past 12 hours. A large posse of police has been deployed in the area to meet any eventuality.

In the wake of contradicting reports about the explosion at Pullyod, in which two CPI (M) activists were killed, the crime branch had been asked to investigate. While the CPI (M) leaders alleged that BJP workers hurled the bomb, BJP leaders claimed that the blast had occurred when CPI (M) workers were making the bombs.

The condition of two others, who were injured in the bomb attack, was stated to be serious.

Sources said the police were gearing up to launch a massive search operation in and around Panur to unearth stockpiles of explosives suspected to have been amassed by rival parties.
