Militants kill NC leader in Anantnag

A National Conference leader, 11 militants and a police constable were among the 18 killed in Kashmir during the past 24 hours. Security forces also captured four militants.

An official spokesman said the militants entered the house of Aba Wani, the NC's Halqa president, at Doru in Anantnag and shot him dead.

The spokesman said that Constable Muzamil Ahmad Shah, injured in a grenade attack at the civil secretariat on September 29, died in hospital this morning.

Militants also shot dead an alleged informer in his Ashtingoo house in Baramulla district last evening, while a beheaded body was recovered from a primary school at Namna Friday morning, he added.

He said militants kidnapped and tortured to death a person at Sangla in Surankote and shot and wounded another on Thursday evening.

People at Kunzar, near Tangmarg, on Friday came out on to the streets to protest the death of one Abdul Salam. The demonstrators alleged that security forces arrested Salam two days ago, and killed him in custody.

The spokesman informed that forces killed eight militants in an encounter in Kathwara forest in Machil sector Thursday evening. Four AK rifles, two rockets, two wireless sets, 55 grenades, 43 detonators, 14 anti-personnel mines, one disposable rocket launcher and eight remote control devices were recovered. Forces also gunned down a militant at Feroezpora while another was killed at Batapora, he added.

Unidentified gunmen killed a released militant, Bilal Ahmad Baig, at Arampora Qamarwari in downtown area this morning.

In Baramulla district, security forces came under heavy fire from militants at Zaloora. They retaliated and in the ensuing battle one foreign militant was killed and two jawans injured. One AK rifle and some magazines were recovered from the site.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Special Operation Group apprehended four militants and recovered some arms and ammunition in Srinagar district.
