Militants kill senior Awami League leader

E-Mail this report to a friend

A senior vice president of Awami League, a counter insurgency group, Mohammad Anawar Sheikh, and his two guards were killed and his wife and daughter-in-law injured when militants attacked his house at Bandipora, about 55 km from Srinagar in north Kashmir, last night.

Elsewhere in the valley, one person was killed and two others injured since last evening, police said.

A group of about 60 heavily armed militants attacked Sheikh's house late last night. Police said Sheikh and his two guards - Mohammad Latief and Daya Mir - were killed and his wife and daughter-in-law seriously injured.

Militants set his house on fire before escaping.

The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital. Official sources said two other guards of Sheikh were on leave at the time of attack.

Senior police and security officials have rushed to the spot and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the assailants.

No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
