Abdul Kalam becomes government's principal scientific adviser

Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, scientific adviser to the defence minister and secretary, Defence Research and Development Organisation, has been appointed principal scientific adviser to the government with the rank of Cabinet minister with immediate effect.

Dr Kalam, who pioneered India's missile programme, will now be the overall adviser on scientific issues, including the achievement of scientific and technological quality in different sectors.

He will also advise the Centre on issues relating to technological self-reliance and foreign collaborations, according to an official source.
