AP brain fever death toll rises to 145

The death toll due to the Japanese encephalitis (brain fever) epidemic in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 145 so far this year, with five deaths reported on Tuesday. All the victims are children in the age group of one to 14 years.

Director of Health K S V Prasada Rao, in a health bulletin issued in Hyderabad on Tuesday night, said that 34 fresh cases were reported on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases so far this year to 721. Of these, 145 cases have proved fatal so far.

The director of health said that as many as 521 villages in 11 districts are in the grip of the epidemic with Kurnool district topping the list with 221 cases and 40 deaths, followed by Anantapur with 186 cases and 34 deaths, Prakasam with 117 cases and 24 deaths, Warangal with 32 cases and 20 deaths and Cuddapah with 38 cases and 10 deaths.

Other affected districts are Guntur, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda and Nellore. In fact, Nellore was added to the list of affected districts only on Tuesday as 10 cases were reported during the day. However, no death has been reported from Nellore.
