National commission to review Constitution

E-Mail this report to a friend

The central government intends to constitute a ''national commission'' to review the Constitution and suggest appropriate changes, Union Home Minister L K Advani said in Varanasi today.

He told newsmen that January 26, 2000 would be the golden jubilee of our republic and it would be an occasion to take a fresh look at the Constitution and analyse its positive and negative points.

He said any changes in the Constitution would be carried out on the basis of a wide consensus and in accordance with the national agenda for governance.

He revealed that the government would introduce several important bills during the winter session of Parliament, including the Women's Reservation Bill and the Election Reform Bill.

Advani said the UP unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party would soon have a new president following Rajnath Singh's induction in the Union Cabinet.

The party president and other senior leaders would take a decision in this regard, he added.
