Ackerman praises Vajpayee regime

E-Mail this report to a friend

United States Congressman Gary Ackerman today said that the Vajpayee government was responsive and respectful and will take India to a new millennium of prosperity.

Addressing a gathering of the captains of industry at the US Investment Summit - the Progressive West, organised by the Indo-US Joint Business Council and US-India Business Council, in Bombay he lauded the efforts of the government in attempting to open up the insurance sector. Policies related to e-commerce and divestment are also commendable, he told the gathering.

Ackerman, who has been elected to the house of representatives for nine consecutive times from New York and is co-chairman of the Congressional Caucus on India said, ''we are on the verge of a new millennium, it is time to open the doors to the outer world for flow of investments...Open the doors, opportunity is knocking.''

He said that in the next century India is poised to become a global economic power and for this some bold decisions need to be taken. He also stressed on the need to make bureaucracy more accountable. At times, I find it very difficult to know who are actually in-charge -- politicians or bureaucrats, he said.
