Sonia hints at major reshuffle in party

E-Mail this report to a friend

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today indicated that a major reshuffle was likely in the party.

There were people at the helm who had no contact with the masses and the party has many shortcomings that needed to be addressed, she said. She was addressing a public meeting in Tiloi assembly segment in Amethi constituency, which she visited for the first time after winning the Lok Sabha elections.

Without naming Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi said there were too many functionaries in party units in many states, while those in some other states were short of people.

There was a need for change, she said, adding that the student, women and youth wings needed to be strengthened. She said revamping the party might take some time but it was her first priority. She sought to assure party workers that their problems would be addressed. Apologising to the public for the delay in visiting the constituency, she said she could not do so earlier because of the Lok Sabha sessions and because her daughter Priyanka was indisposed.
