Sonia denies deal on Bofors chargesheet

E-Mail this report to a friend

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today categorically denied that an understanding had been reached between the government and her party over removing the name of her late husband and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi from the Bofors chargesheet.

On her arrival at the Fursatganj airport in Amethi, reporters asked her if the government had shown any soft corner for her party in the Bofors chargesheet issue, to which her answer was a firm, ''not at all.''

Asked about the ongoing rift in the Uttar Pradesh state Congress unit, she said it was a minor issue and would be resolved soon.

On the poor performance of the party in the recent Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi said a committee had been constituted to study the reasons. Any action in this regard would be taken only after the committee submitted its report, she said.

This is her first visit to Amethi after being elected to the Lok Sabha from the constituency. Banners and flags welcoming her to Amethi had been put up everywhere and enthusiastic party workers were seen waiting for her at the airport.
