ELECTION 99
|
Major reverses for BJP in BiharThe Bharatiya Janata Party, which had bagged 40 out of 50 seats in alliance with the Janata Dal-United in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election, faced a complete rout in the remaining four seats from Bihar. The BJP has been defeated in Purnea and Rajmahal (reserved). It is now trailing by an unassailable margin in Bhagalpur. However, its electoral ally, the Janata Dal-United managed to retain Khagaria. In Rajmahal, Thomas Hansda (Congress) has defeated his nearest rival Som Marandi (BJP) by more than 62,000 votes. The Communist Party of India-Marxist, which was wiped out from the state in the last parliamentary election and also drew a blank in the recently concluded poll, has opened its account. Subodh Roy has defeated his nearest rival Parvesh Chandra Tiwari (BJP) by over 40,500 votes in the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha constituency. The party has gained the seat. The BJP received a stunning blow when independent Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, a former member of the Lok Sabha, made the party eat a humble pie from Purnea. Yadav defeated Jai Krishna Mandal by more than 200,000 votes. Yadav fought the election from jail. He has been detained in connection with a murder case. In Manipur, the National Congress Party candidate has declared elected from the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. In Assam, the Congress is all set to win the Dhubri seat with its candidate Abdul Hamid establishing a lead of over 20,000 votes over his nearest rival Bimal Oswal (BJP) in a multi-cornered contest. Counting of votes in all the 10 assembly segments had been completed. But the result of the Mancachar assembly segment was yet to be received as it was being sent by road to Dhubri. UNI
