'The action by the air force should have been taken much earlier'

Subject: Kargil operations

I was surprised to see the depth of news in rediff.com on the Indo-Pak border. All through the day I was listening to Star News and CNN but none of them gave as much insight or depth as your reports.

Subject: Pakistan deserves a strong lesson

Pakistan has been a constant danger to Indian citizens and to Kashmir. The recent attacks on the Indians is another step to terrorise Indians in that region. India has suffered a lot at the hand of Pakistan just because we want peace. Just because India does not want the bloodshed of innocent people on both the sides of the border doesn't mean that Pakistan thinks India is incapable of blasting them.

It's high time we teach Pakistan the lesson it deserves. Let us all relieve Pakistan of the incapable leaders it has and give true freedom to the Pakistanis and Kashmiris.

To promote peace on earth, the terrorising power of Pakistan must be depleted.

Subject: Kargil

The action by the air force should have been taken much earlier. But obviously responsible people at many levels were telling lies and trying to hide the actual situation. The number of infiltrators is much higher than revealed earlier, they are well armed and self contained maybe for another six months.

If they are about 5, 6 km inside Indian territory then how do the authorities say that they can be encircled only from three sides? So even today some facts are being hidden, probably the extent of damage and limit of intrusion is much higher and the situation is not at all under control.

Pakistan is indulging in this constant proxy war. We should clear the mercenaries off Kashmir, it is ours and we will do anything for it.

We need to strengthen ourself and defend our territory. We need to give Pakistan a befitting answer by fully resorting to attacking their position.

Subject: This is no time for war

Just read that India has started air strikes in Kashmir. This is no time for war with Pakistan, especially given that both parties are equipped with nuclear-weapons.

It is important that a person like Vajpayee shows patience and goes for a dialogue and a peaceful solution, rather than bombing.

The air force has done an excellent thing and I would like to congratulate the prime minister, defence minister and the Indian defence forces for the action.

Subject: They always had superior weapons then us, but?

Pakistan has always received superior weapons than India from USA. But the problem is they have always failed to create an impact on India. In the 1965 war they had got Patton battle tanks which were known to be the best in the world at that time, they now lie in Amritsar after the Indians blasted all of them. In 1971, they got the fast Saber jet planes, but they were outdone by our planes.

It is how intelligently the war is fought and not just making a stock of weapons. Ten nuke bombs or more are not going to defeat India, but after that India will not keep quiet. We have weapons which are made in India itself. Pakistan has to borrow from either China or US or Korea. We should stop comparing ourselves with Pakistan and prepare ourselves fully against China. It is a bigger threat to us.

I think this step should have been taken a week ago, when the army authorities found that the territory is occupied. It's not too late now to go ahead with it. I wish success to the forces in their operation.

I wish all Indians are united in condemning Pak's attitude.

This is a very good step India has taken and they have to keep on striking till the infiltrators are flushed out.

Subject: Why do they need 'three more' brigades to 'tackle just 300' Pak infiltrators?

You are thinking in a wrong way. It cannot be one-on-one. We can't judge our jawans' courage and power by numbers. How many went to the Mysore hills to nab sandalwood smuggler Veerappan? It was some 500:1. As the army officer has said himself the infiltrators have the advantage of height. Since we are below them (around 800 to 900 feet) we have less of a chance. There is no other way than using our air force. In doing so, we might cross the aerial boundary which may lead to firing anti-aircraft missiles from the enemy territory. They can always claim that they shot it down because Indian fighter planes crossed the international border. There will not be any proof for such things.

"The army better pack up if they can't clean up 300 people." I think this is a bit harsh. We don't have any authority to say this. Army officers cannot reveal many of the things which might lead to this situation. There are various reasons for which they have to hide from the public. Regarding the failure of intelligence, we have to think that Pakistan too have an equally good intelligence. This time they might have succeeded because of the advantage in terms of terrain. Let us hope for the best and let us not make the people of this great nation think that our jawans are doing nothing.

To think that because Pak has suffered defeat thrice -- it will not wage a war again after almost 29 years is wrong. We lack information. Think what will be their plan of action. I am scared.

But I am sure a country that has taken so many wars and still survived, will win.

Subject: Pak has enough nuke bombs

Pakistan has got nuke bombs from China and North Korea. Whereas China stole this technology from USA for the last 20 years. North Korea and China have no democracy. Still USA supports China in the trade world. What a disgrace?

Subject: IAF launches second wave of strikes

It would not be surprising if the UN tries to interfere in bilateral affairs again. India should reserve the right to "hot pursuit" well into Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Just the way the US have attacked terrorist countries, India should have its own right to do so in its own national interest.

Be prepared to face the brainwash and arm twisting by the Western world. India will do well to learn the extremely valuable lessons from NATO, also about media manipulation.

It is high time the Indian government stopped soft-pedalling vis-a-vis Pakistan policy makers and Pakistan intelligence. While my heart goes to the suffering people of Pakistan and Kashmir, I have scantiest tolerance for the ISI and Pakistani government tactics. Pakistani belligerence is not only to provoke India but is also trying to create a similar cease-fire that occurred in previous wars with Pakistan.

When Pakistan agreed to negotiations, I just could not believe it. But they came to the table with daggers behind their backs. I was under the impression that Pakistan, using the smokescreen of the Lahore Declaration, would make a serious attempt to grab as much of Kashmir as possible like the piecemeal grabbing it has done in the past. This "dagger-behind-the-backs" approach reminds me of China attacking India while openly declaring, "Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai"!!

Lastly, in a deteriorating Sino-US relations, India is very likely to be caught in the crossfire! The message therefore is: DO NOT SIGN CTBT, NPT OR FMCT. SERVE NATIONAL INTERESTS FIRST!!!

Dr Abdul Kalam, my hero, please speed up the defence preparedness and please make more nuclear warheads. I anticipate war with Pakistan and China. I also anticipate Western forces meddling in our bilateral affair.

Narayanan
