Congress candidate from Loutalim wins unopposed

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Congress candidate from the Loutalim assembly constituency in south Goa, Alexio Sequiera, had a walkover when four candidates including a Bharatiya Janata Party nominee withdrew from the fray.

Sequiera was a member of the dissolved house.

BJP candidate Seby Fernandes retired from the fray at the eleventh hour.

Today is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.

A traditional Catholic-dominated stronghold of the Congress party, Loutalim had elected Radharao Gracias, now a leader of the United Goans Democratic Party, in the last elections.

With the withdrawal of Seby Fernandes, the BJP had suffereed a big jolt, a party spokesman said. The office of the chief electoral officer in Panaji clarified that Sequiera would be declared elected only when the election commissioner clears it.
