EC refuses to consider Sonia issue
without official complaint

Chief Election Commissioner Manohar Singh Gill today said the commission would consider the issue of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's enrolment as a voter in 1980, even before she had acquired Indian citizenship, "only if something comes to the notice of the EC officially".

Gill said the Election Commission would not take cognisance of mere newspaper reports, which "tend to sensationalise such matters".

"Do not even ask this question," he said, when asked if the commission would investigate the allegation against Gandhi. "It [the allegation against Sonia Gandhi] is a matter between parties, we are not concerned with it," Gill said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged that Sonia Gandhi's name appeared as a voter in the New Delhi constituency list in 1980, though she was not an Indian citizen then. Her name was struck off the list in 1982, while she became a citizen of India in April 1983.

The Congress has already denied the charge against her and said she exercised her franchise only after becoming an Indian citizen.
