Soldiers plug part of Bhakra breach

E-Mail this report to a friend

Hundreds of army jawans and civilians using earthmoving equipment and aided by local villagers are busy plugging the breach in the Bhakra main line canal near Patran, in Patiala district.

A hundred-foot breach occurred in the canal at Shatrana village on Wednesday night, inundating 70 farmhouses and 3,000 acres of land after trees uprooted during a squall blocked it.

According to reports available in Chandigarh today, a part of the breach has been plugged, while work is in progress to plug the remaining portion.

Senior Punjab and Haryana irrigation department officials are camping at the breach site since yesterday to oversee the plugging operations.
