Vajpayee, Advani meet President to explain governors' recall

E-Mail this report to a friend

In a significant development, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani today called on President K R Narayanan and explained to him the compelling circumstances which forced the government to recall the governors of West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.

The meeting lasted for about 30 minutes.

The government's decision on the governors evoked sharp criticism from West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and other Opposition parties, who questioned the propriety of the move.

Both the governors were on extension. While West Bengal governor A R Kidwai put in his papers at the instance of the state chief minister, the Arunachal Pradesh governor Mata Prasad has challenged the home ministry's move, saying that the President alone could ask him to step down since he is the appointing authority.
