Kalpnath Rai returns to CongressKalpnath Rai, minister in the P V Narasimha Rao Cabinet and Samata Party member of the twelfth Lok Sabha, rejoined the Congress today, giving a boost to the party's electoral prospects in Uttar Pradesh. All-India Congress Committee general secretary Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters that Rai's return would strengthen the Congress. Rai recalled his long association with the Congress and said that party alone could provide stability, good governance and development. He also narrated the sequence of events from quitting the Congress following his arrest under the now-defunct Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act on the charge of harbouring underworld hitmen to his return to the party. His wife also joined the party with Rai. Later they called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi. UNI |
