US hopes for BJP-Congress consensus on CTBTC K Arora in Washington Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Karl F Inderfurth has said the United States still hoped the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and the Congress would find common ground on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty before the Lok Sabha elections. ''We recognise the difficulty of moving forward with the CTBT between now and the elections, but we would hope the caretaker government and the Opposition would continue to see if steps could be taken,'' he said in an interview with The New York Times. The daily also quoted an unnamed 'senior' state department official as saying that he hoped that the progress made in building closer ties between the United States and India did not get lost in India's political turmoil. ''Otherwise, we're in danger of once again being ships passing in the night,'' he said.
