Fernandes, Jaswant clarify stand on transfers to CEC

E-Mail this report to a friend

Defence Minister George Fernandes and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh met Chief Election Commissioner Manohar Singh Gill today and are believed to have clarified the government's stand on the recent transfer of several officers, including the Union home secretary.

The meeting lasted 90 minutes.

Later, Singh told reporters they discussed all aspects of the Lok Sabha election with Gill.

"The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere," he said, but declined to say answer whether the transfers were discussed. "The discussion was good," he quipped.

The Congress and the Communist parties had objected to the transfers and urged President K R Narayanan and the Election Commission to intervene, saying a caretaker government has no authority to effect such transfers when the country is going to have a general election in a few months.
