JD to contest limited seats

Janata Dal president Sharad Yadav today said his party would contest limited seats in the coming Lok Sabha elections depending on its strength.

Speaking to newsmen in Delhi, he said the primary objective of the Dal was to consolidate the Third Force. The party's poll strategy would be prepared in consultation with the state party chiefs and after the proposed national executive meeting at Delhi on May 24 and 25, he added.

He said party observers would be sent all over the country to assess the political situation. He would be visiting Bhubaneswar and senior leader Madhu Dandavate was going to Bihar.

Predicting yet another 'fractured mandate', he said the Dal felt that Parliament should not be dissolved by the new dispensation for at least two years. Mid-term polls had become necessary as there was no alternative.

Asked about the Congress projecting its president Sonia Gandhi as the future prime minister, Yadav said he did not want to comment on the internal affairs of another party.
