Marathi playwright urges Supreme Court to reopen Gandhi murder case

A writ petition to reopen the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case of 1948 was filed in the Supreme Court today.

Pradeep Chandrakant Dalvi, author of the controversial Marathi play Me Nathuram Godse Boltoy (This is Nathuram Godse Speaking), filed the petition.

The play was banned last year by the Maharashtra government at the Centre's instance.

Dalvi has urged the Supreme Court to order the Central Bureau of Investigation to reopen the case so that the "really guilty" can be brought to book.

Seeking a writ of mandamus or any other appropriate order to the Union government and others, Dalvi said all the records and proceedings in the case, including the complete report with all statements of witnesses and documents recorded by the Delhi police, be produced in the light of some new facts found by him.

He claims to have noticed several discrepancies and illegalities in the evidence relied upon by the prosecution to prove the charge of murder and conspiracy against Nathuram Godse, his brother Gopal, and Narayan Apte after his play was banned.

Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte were hanged for Gandhi's murder. Gopal Godse was released after serving a life term.

Dalvi claims to have "found sufficient grounds to presume that there were other persons involved in the conspiracy and murder".
