Gurcharan Singh Tohra quits as SGPC president

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Gurcharan Singh Tohra today resigned from his post.

Tohra had earlier warned that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would have to repent for his "interference" in the religious affairs of the Sikhs.

It was a foregone conclusion that the Badal camp would oust Tohra from his post tomorrow. At least 140 members of the 185-member SGPC owing allegiance to Badal had left Chandigarh for Amritsar to participate in the SGPC general house meeting at the Teja Singh Samundari Hall in the Golden Temple complex to vote Tohra out.

Badal is also expected to attend the meeting in his capacity as Shiromani Akali Dal president.
