AJMM serves ultimatum on Jharkhand issue

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Akhil Jharkhand Mukti Morcha today served an ultimatum to the central government on the Jharkhand issue, stating that it should not be held responsible for any untoward incident that occurred if the Bihar state re-organisation bill, 1998 was not passed in the current session of Parliament.

Talking to journalists in Ranchi, AJMM President Krishna Mardi and Secretary-Genenral Sudhir Mahato said the party was ready to go to any extent to realising the region's decades-old demand of statehood. He urged the Centre to take up the matter of the state's creation in the budget session or be prepared to face "people's wrath".

The AJMM has urged all like-minded parties to mount pressure on the Centre.

A party delegation, comprising its senior leaders, is to call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani on March 24 to press for the early adoption of the bill, said party vice-president Prabhar Tirkey.

The AJMM central executive, that met here yesterday, also condemned the revocation of President's rule and the "return of the anti-Jharkhand Rabri Devi government" in Bihar.

The party appealed to the people to boycott all political parties and legislators who would support the Rabri Devi government during the trust vote in the state assembly on Wednesday.

It also resolved to constitute its district units by the end of May and take up constructive programmes for the development of Jharkhand.

The AJMM office-bearers were assigned the task of monitoring the ongoing developmental works in the area and to initiate necessary steps for streamlining the functions of the party by ensuring mass participation in its proposed programmes.
