'Floating Messiah' for AP

A mobile boat clinic, which has been launched in Andhra Pradesh, is a 'Floating Messiah' for the people living in the cyclone-battered islands of Diviseema of Krishna district.

Bishop Marampudi Joji, who flagged off the boat, said that the people could now avail of primary health care, vaccination, health education, pre-natal care, mother and child care.

The 33 feet long, 8.9 feet wide and 4.2 feet deep boat clinic, which is equipped with an operation theatre, has been specially designed by Kolli Fibres, Kakinada.

The project was conceived a decade back when the islands were devastated by a severe cyclone killing many people besides rendering thousands homeless, he added.

He said Unione Medico Missionaria Italia had come forward to launch the community health project for the Edurumondi people.

Dr Pietro Pepe and his wife Alessandfa were official representatives of Ummi for the three-year project costing Rs 5 million.

The bishop said women of the islets would be trained as midwives and nuns and would be posted at the island to render medical attention.
