Army launches 'synergised operations' in Assam

E-Mail this report to a friend

Para-military forces today launched "synergised operations" to smash hideouts and flush out militants from Assam.

An official release by the army's 21 sector said the army and Assam Rifles had launched a massive combing and search operation in their areas to curb extremism. The commander, 21 sector, Brigadier B K Ponwar was supervising the operation, the release added.

In the first eight hours of the operation, nine hardcore militants had been apprehended from various parts of the state and cash, incriminating documents and firearms had been recovered.

The army was making all-out efforts to bring peace and tranquility in the state, and appealing to the ultras to join the mainstream.

A number of medical camps were also organised. The army would also focus on overall development of the tribals through the "synergised operation", the release added.

It denied a report, published in a section of press, that some political parties were interfering in the operation.
