Jamaat calls for army to rule Pakistan

E-Mail this report to a friend

Jamaat Islami chief Qazi Husain Ahmad has called for the establishment of national government in Pakistan by the army chief.

At a rally in Rawalpindi on Saturday night Qazi Husain maintained that the army chief fulfilled the requirements of sections 62 and 63 of the constitution, but opposed the imposition of martial law.

He asked the army to take corrective action against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief.

Qazi Husain accused Sharief of plundering national wealth and being a part of the Clinton conspiracy against the country for the implementation of a new world order in collaboration with Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He asked Sharief to resign immediately as he had failed to meet the challenges of the era. The qazi said the Jamaat was not interested in power, but wanted a national government with honest people from different sections of Pakistan society to be formed.

Meanwhile, Sharief is to visit the United States in June, the daily Dawn reported, quoting the premier's brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharief, who is currently visiting the US.

''I will also accompany the prime minister in June,'' Shahbaz Sharief said. He has held delicate negotiations with the US administration and international financial institutions on behalf of his brother's government.

His high profile contacts in Washington were criticised by the Opposition in Pakistan as encroachment on the foreign ministry's domain.
