Army jawan killed in Baramulla

An army jawan and four militants were killed in north Kashmir district of Baramulla since last evening, official sources said today.

An army jawan, Virender Singh, was killed during an encounter with militants at Akwankanur in Tangmarg last evening. The militants managed to escape.

Four militants were killed in an encounter with a joint search party of Jammu and Kashmir police special operation group and security forces at Panthan village near Bandipora last evening.

Security forces retaliated when they were fired upon by the militants and the exchange continued for several hours, the sources said. Security forces also fired mortar shells towards militant hideouts.

Bodies of four militants, including Jalal-ud-Din alias Muslim, a self-styled company commander, Khursheed Ahmad Lone, a self-styled battalion commander and Mohammad Aslam Mir, were recovered from near the site of encounter. One house situated in the vicinity was damaged in mortar shelling, the sources said.

Three AK rifles, 14 magazines, eight grenades and 250 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
