Bombay's ex-mayor Milind Vaidya injured in shootout

Two persons were killed while former mayor of Bombay Milind Vaidya and four others were injured, one of them seriously, at Mori Road, Mahim, north-west Bombay, at about 2215 hours IST today.

Police sources said Vaidya and his associates were sitting outside his residence when four unidentified assailants from a white Maruti Zen fired indiscriminately, wounding the former mayor and killing two others.

The dead persons have been identified as Vilas Gopinath Aakre (35) and Milind Choudhry (35).

The injured persons are Babu Kashinath Mangela, Vinay Narain Aakre, Nichal Krishna and Deepak Aakre. Deepak is reported to be hurt badly. All have been admitted to the Hinduja hospital.

Police Commissioner Ronald Mendonca visited the hospital to take stock of the situation.

This is the second attempt on the life of the Shiv Sena politician.
