No stable alternative to Vajpayee government, says Moopanar

Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Moopanar today said even an alternative government formed in the event of the fall of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition would be unstable.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Madras, he said the formation of an alternative government depends on the attitude of the Congress. But even such a government will have to face the numbers game and will be unstable, he said.

Moopanar predicted that even if fresh elections are held to the Lok Sabha, there will be a coalition government at the Centre again.

This assessment is in sharp contrast to the Congress plan to return to power at the Centre on its own after the next election.

Moopanar conceded that the prospects of the Congress in the next election would be better as the BJP-led government, which came to power on the slogan of an able prime minister and a stable government, had only provided a disabled prime minister and an unstable government.

Moopanar, who has been campaigning for the restoration of 'Kamaraj rule' in Tamil Nadu, now ruled by the TMC's electoral ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, said the formation of a third front in the state is different from trying to usher in Kamaraj rule.

The third front in the state will be led by the TMC (as opposed to the present alliance which is led by the DMK), he said, signalling a break-up in the present alliance.

But a third front at the national level has no prospect of coming to power after the next election as the BJP and the Congress will bag a major portion of the Lok Sabha seats, he said.
