Electronic Voting Machines in 46 constituencies

Electronic Voting Machines will be used in 46 Parliamentary constituencies spread over 17 states and union territories for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Encouraged by their successful use in the recent elections in Goa, the Election Commission has decided to arm certain constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnaka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Union Territories of Chandigarh, National Capital Territory of Delhi and Pondicherry with EVMs.

The Parliamentary constituencies where these machines would be used are: Hyderabad and Secunderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Panaji and Mormugoa (Goa), Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Karnal and Rohtak (Haryana), Bangalore North, Bangalore South and Mysore (Karnataka), Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Gwalior and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai North-West and Mumbai North-East (Maharasthtra), Bhubaneswar (Orissa), Tarn Taran, Patiala and Faridkot (Punjab), Jaipur and Ajmer (Rajasthan), Madras Central, Madras South, Coimbatore and Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Calcutta North-West, Calcutta North-East and Calcutta South (West Bengal), Lucknow, Allahabad, Kanour and Agra (Uttar Pradesh), one constituency each in Chandigarh and Pondicherry and seven constituencies in Delhi.

The seven Lok Sabha constituencies in delhi include New Delhi, South Delhi, Outer Delhi, East Delhi, Chandni Chowk, Delhi Sadar and Karol Bagh.

Announcing this, the Election Commission said there are 386 assembly segments with sixty million electorate falling under the parliamentary constituencies which have been marked for the use of EVMs.

The number of polling booths in these constituencies will be nearly 65,000. An estimated 100,000 EVMs would will be required, the commission said.

The commission would launch a major campaign to educate the electorate on the use of the EVMs and training programmes would also be organised for the personnel who would be associated with the conduct of the elections, the commissions said.
